1-hour Virtual Education Session for Continuing care assistants-becoming a reflective professional

Introduction: In this virtual session, I will introduce the use of reflective practice as a learning tool to assist you to uncover and explore the wealth of knowledge and wisdom you have gained through your caring work. I have developed this educational session uniquely for Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs) working in long term care environments to support your continuous professional development. I will provide some specific strategies and resources designed for you and the kind of work you do.

Why do I believe this is important? This is something that I believe could be so beneficial for CCAs especially now after having gone through and continuing to go through the pandemic. As front-line health care workers, CCAs are confronted regularly with situations that are confusing, ambivalent, and must address moral and ethical concerns when working with residents and their families and colleagues.

CCAs work during the pandemic: Continuing Care Assistants provide care and support to assist people to meet their holistic health needs. Over the past two years, the COVID pandemic placed enormous challenges on the long-term care environment and greater responsibilities on the shoulders of CCAs. During the pandemic, CCAs were not only required to perform additional tasks within already busy roles but also became residents’ sole social connection and community.

The Benefits of Reflective Practice:

· It is evidence-based and supports lifelong learning

· Reflection reinforces there is no endpoint to learning from everyday professional practice

· Assists CCAs to learn and adapt to challenges and changes in the health care environment

· Enhances self-awareness and insight into one’s professional practice and builds on expertise

· Enhances competence and safe and ethical caring practices

· Validates and improves the CCA’s and others’ perception of being a true professional who really makes a difference to residents, their families, colleagues and the community.
